Iran's Esteghlal beats Uzbek Nasaf Qarshi 2-0 in AFC Champions League

Iran's Esteghlal soccer team defeated Nasaf Qarshi of Uzbekistan 2-0 in the AFC Champions League (ACL), the local Tehran Times daily reported on Thursday.

In the match held on Wednesday, Goran Jerkovic put the visiting Esteghlal team into the lead just 10 minutes into the match. Afterward, Nasaf Qarshi the host maintained possession on Esteghlal's half but its strikers didn't take advantage of their chances.

Mojtaba Jabbari converted a penalty kick five minutes into the second half and extended Esteghlal's lead.

After the last round matches in the group stage, Al Jazira of the UAE and Esteghlal advanced to the knockout stage with Al Jazira winning 16 points as the first and Esteghlal with 11 points as the second.

Iranian champions Sepahan will play host to Esteghlal in the ACL Round of 16, while Al Jazira will take on Al Ahli, one of three Saudi clubs in the final 16.
