Indonesia outclasses South Africa 5-0 in Uber Cup

The Indonesian Uber Cup team beat an inferior South Africa 5-0 in pool A’s qualification round opener at the Thomas and Uber Cup finals in Wuhan, China, on Monday.

Indonesia’s world No. 33 Maria Febe Kusumastuti in the women’s singles made a breezy start for her team after outclassing South African Kerry-Lee Harrington 21-9, 21-9.

World singles No. 39 Adrianti Firdasari, confirmed Indonesia’s better performance with a 21-9, 21-5 victory against Stacey Doubell.

Meanwhile world No. 57 Lindaweni Fanetri continued the good form by beating Annari Viljoen 21-5, 21-8.

In the fourth match, the world women’s pairs No. 19 Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Anneke Feinya Agustin saw off Stacey Doubell and Kerry-Lee Harrington in a 21-5, 21-5 win.

Finally world pairs No. 13 Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari wrapped up the day with a solid 21-2, 21-12 win against Michelle Claire Edwards and Annari Viljoen.

All Indonesia-South Africa matches were finished in less than 22 minutes.

In the Thomas Cup, Indonesia faced a slightly tougher competitor, England, in pool A’s qualification round.

Indonesia’s first men’s singles shuttler world No. 9 Simon Santoso fulfilled the nation’s expectation by beating world No. 19 Rajiv Ouseph 21-19, 21-9.

Unexpectedly, world No. 9 Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan were upset by world No. 23 Chris Adcock and Andrew Ellis 19-21, 21-14, 17-21 in the second match.

Indonesia’s world No. 12 Taufik Hidayat won 21-12, 21-16 against world No. 69 Carl Baxter.

Later in the day, Indonesian pair Mohammad Ahsan and Alvent Yulianto Chandra in the men’s doubles were scheduled to meet Chris Langridge and Nathan Robertson.

Last single’s shuttler Indonesian Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka was due to take on Ben Beckman.

On Tuesday, Indonesia will meet China in both Thomas and Uber Cup matches.
