The mascot of the 12th National Games was unveiled on Saturday in Shenyang, the capital of northeast China's Liaoning province.
The pronunciation of the harbor seal's name — Ningning — is identical to the last character in the name of the province and means "peace" or "calm."
The harbor seal is usually found along the coast of northern China, especially in southeast Liaoning province's Bohai Sea. It is under second-class state protection in the country.
The mascot Ningning was selected out of 1,070 pieces of art works collected from 24 provinces and regions in China.
The 12th National Games will open in Shenyang in August, 2013.
