COLOMBO, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Japan took a lead by winning the first gold and the silver at the 15th Asian Junior Athletics Championships that kicked off in Colombo on Saturday.
Kyuma Haruka and Kyuma Moe finished 1-2 in the opening event 5,000m at the championships held for the first time in Sri Lanka.
Haruka finished with a timing of 16:07 while Kyuma Moe finished with 16:08 and the bronze went to South Korea's Kim Hyr Gyeeg in 16:32.
Sri Lanka officially opened the championships that attracted over 500 athletes from 34 countries and regions, with a gala ceremony colored by traditional dances and cultural events.
The four-day event will go till June 12.
