Germany's 18th seed Julia Goerges battled her way to the fourth round here on Friday after beating Chinese Zheng Jie 6-3, 1-6 and 7-5 at the Australan Open.
Goerges hit 19 winners during the first set. When she was serving at 5-1, the world No.40 Chinese manages to claim one of the breaks back before holding her own. But the former Wimbledon semi-finalist could not stop the German from eventually serving out the set at the second time of asking.
Zheng seized the advantage early in the second set and did not let it go, storming to a convincing 6-1 victory.
Both players played their best tennis in the deciding set, with powerful strokes coming from both ends of the court. But it was Zheng who made the crucial breakthrough, allowing her to serve for the match at 5-4.
However, Goerges dug deep and broke back to keep her tournament alive. After holding serve, Goerges earned three match points and needed only one to set up a fourth-round encounter with 2011 runner-up Li Na.
"Well, overall it was a great match. I think we had tough rallies, good shots and good winners." said Goerges. "But the last four games were pretty good of myself. I stayed there the whole match. I knew I always have a chance to break her because her serve is not so huge."
"The match could have gone either way. I had the lucky end at the end. But the next match will be a tough one. Li's a Grand Slam champion, and I have to be there from the first second on." added Goerges.
