BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Diego Maradona is in "excellent" condition and will remain head coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima following successful brain surgery, his lawyer said on Wednesday.

"The latest medical procedure was excellent. We wish him a lot of strength so that he can move forward," Matias Morla told reporters outside the Olivos clinic in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

He ruled out suggestions that the 60-year-old could travel to Venezuela or Cuba to complete his recovery.

"Diego loves Cuba. Yesterday I spoke with the son of Fidel Castro. Both Venezuela and Cuba are friendly countries for Diego, but his head is with Gimnasia."

Maradona underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday after he was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma, a pool of blood between a membrane and his brain.

Leopoldo Luque, Maradona's personal physician, later declared the 80-minute operation a success, saying the former Napoli and Boca Juniors forward was awake and feeling "very well".

Maradona was admitted to the Ipensa clinic in La Plata, south of Buenos Aires, on Monday with what was initially thought to be dehydration and anemia. He was transferred to the Olivos clinic on Tuesday afternoon.

Widely regarded as one of the best players in history, Maradona has been beset by health problems since retiring as a player 1997.

In 2004, the 1986 World Cup winner was hospitalized with severe heart and respiratory problems related to a long battle with drug addiction. He has also undergone two gastric bypass operations to control his weight and received treatment for alcohol abuse.
