BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Palmeiras took a giant stride towards a place in the Copa Libertadores final on Tuesday with a 3-0 away win over Argentine side River Plate in the first leg of their semifinal.

Rony Barbosa put the visitors ahead at the Libertadores de America stadium in Buenos Aires with a low strike after a bungled clearance by goalkeeper Franco Armani.

Luiz Adriano doubled the lead with a cool finish after a counterattack and Matias Vina headed in the third goal following a Gustavo Scarpa set piece.

The hosts were forced to play the final half hour with 10 men after Jorge Carrascal was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Gabriel Menino.

The return leg will be played at Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo on January 12.

The winner on aggregate will meet either Boca Juniors or Santos in the final at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium on January 30. Enditem
