PORTO ALEGRE, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Internacional scored twice in second-half stoppage time to extend their lead at the top of the Brazilian Serie A standings with a 2-1 win over local rivals Gremio on Sunday.
Jean Pyerre fired Gremio ahead in the 76th minute when he combined with Diego Souza and calmly swept home a low finish after a counterattack.
Abel Hernandez equalized with a header after Victor Cuesta's cross and Edenilson Santos completed an unlikely comeback by converting a 98th-minute penalty after Walter Kannemann's handball.
The result at the Beira-Rio stadium moved Internacional four points clear of second-placed Sao Paulo with six matches remaining for both clubs.
Gremio have now gone four matches without a victory and are sixth, 11 points off the pace.
Meanwhile, defending champions Flamengo missed the chance to stay in touch with Internacional, suffering a 2-1 defeat at Athletico Paranaense.
Abner Vinicius and Renato Kayser netted either side of a Gustavo Henrique strike as Paranaense maintained their slim hopes of securing a Copa Libertadores berth.
Flamengo remain third in the standings, seven points behind Inter, while Paranaense are 11th, 20 points adrift.
Elsewhere, Santos squandered a 2-0 lead at half-time to lose 4-3 at home to Goias. Lucas Braga and Kaio Jorge struck early for the hosts before a Rafael Moura brace and goals from David Duarte and Fernandao handed Goias a 4-2 lead.
Striker Marinho pulled a goal back for Santos when he converted from the penalty spot three minutes from time.
