Ghana's Black Satellites off to Mauritania for U-20 AFCON tournament

ACCRA, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Ghana's U-20 men's national soccer team, the Black Satellites departed here Saturday to Mauritania for the 2021 Confederation of African Football (CAF) U-20 African cup of nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ghana's delegation, made up of 26 players and 9 technical team officials and management will be based in Nouadhibou for the group stages of the tournament.

The Black Satellites are in Group C with Morocco, Tanzania, and The Gambia. The Ghanaian side will face off with Tanzania in their opening game on Feb.16 before playing Morocco and The Gambia in subsequent group games.

The Ghana U-20 team qualified for the tournament after reaching the finals of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B U-20 cup of nations in Benin in which they defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 to lift the trophy.

Ghana won the U-20 AFCON in 1993, 1999, and 2009 and also went on to win the U-20 world cup in the same year in Egypt where they beat Brazil in an epic penalty shoot-out in the final match to lift the trophy.

The U-20 AFCON tournament will commence on Feb. 14 and end on March 6. Enditem
