BUENOS AIRES, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Boca Juniors winger Eduardo Salvio faces at least six months on the sidelines after suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament of his left knee, the Argentine club said on Monday.

The 30-year-old sustained the injury after landing awkwardly in the first half of Boca's 1-1 home draw with Sarmiento in Argentina's Professional League Cup on Sunday.

Scans on Monday confirmed the club's worst fears and Salvio will undergo surgery in the coming days.

"Stay strong Toto," the Buenos Aires outfit said on Twitter alongside a message confirming the gravity of the injury.

It will be Salvio's third operation to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, having undergone the same procedure on his right knee in 2013 and 2015 while playing for Benfica.

Capped 14 times for Argentina's national team, Salvio's 13-year professional career has also included spells at Lanus and Atletico Madrid. Enditem
