MEXICO CITY, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Liga MX president Mikel Arriola has lent his support to a proposal that would merge Mexico's top national football competition with U.S. Major League Soccer.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in March that a fusion could "quite well be the best league in the world" while Mexico national team manager Gerardo Martino has also supported the initiative.

"The consensus is that North America has to be strengthened, the two leagues are very complementary," Arriola told a virtual news conference on Thursday. "The strategy is to continue expanding football's presence (in the U.S.) and continue talking about how we can keep growing there.

"The two leagues would be much stronger if they could start to generate momentum together. If there is growth in both leagues in monetary terms, there will be a better spectacle."

Arriola announced that the Leagues Cup and Campeones Cup - which feature the best teams from Mexico and the U.S. - would be played in the second half of 2021 after being cancelled last year because of COVID-19.

In addition, he confirmed that an All-Star game - featuring players from both leagues - would also be played this year. Enditem
