MONTEVIDEO, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Former Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain winger Cristian Rodriguez has joined Uruguay's Plaza Colonia for the 2021 season after parting ways with Penarol.
It will mark the 35-year-old's return to his home province of Colonia - around 180km west of capital Montevideo - after more than two decades away.
"Welcome home, Onion," the club said on Twitter, referring to Rodriguez's nickname.
Rodriguez left Penarol last month after being told of the club's decision to focus on youth.
Capped 110 times for Uruguay's national team, the attacker was part of the Celeste squad that reached the semifinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Uruguay's 2021 domestic football season is scheduled to begin on April 24. Enditem
