LIMA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Mexican-born striker Santiago Ormeno will be included in Peru's preliminary squad for this year's Copa America, Blanquirroja head coach Ricardo Gareca said on Monday.

The 27-year-old is the grandson of former Peru national team goalkeeper Walter Ormeno and is eligible to represent both countries.

"[Ormeno] will be on the provisional 50-man list of 30 players for the Copa America," Gareca told radio station RPP.

"He is a player we have observed. Everyone that meets legal requirements [to play for Peru] is considered," he added.

Ormeno, who has scored 16 goals in 31 Liga MX games for Puebla this season, has previously been non-committal about his preference, having declared in February that he would choose the national team that selected him first.

Gareca will name his preliminary list for football's oldest international tournament on April 27.

Originally scheduled for 2020, the 47th edition of the Copa America - to be played in Argentina and Colombia - was postponed by a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The competition will begin on June 11 with a clash between Argentina and Chile at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires. The final will be played in Colombia's Caribbean port city of Barranquilla on July 10.

Peru have been drawn in Group B alongside Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Ecuador. Enditem
