Dominican Republic grabs last quarterfinal berth over Japan in Olympic women's volleyball

TOKYO, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Dominican Republic beat Japan 3-1 here Monday evening to grab the last quarterfinal berth in the women's volleyball competition of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Dominican Republic claimed a 25-10, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19 victory in the do-or-die match to finish fourth ahead of Japan in pool A with a 2-3 win-loss record, while the hosts crashed out after winning only one match in five tries.

"We are very happy to pull off this victory and we knew it was going to be a tough match because we were fighting for the same qualification," said Prisilla Rivera Brens, who led Dominican Republic with 17 points. "We were aware of our responsibility and... we were able to realize our goal in this match."

Brazil swept Kenya 3-0 to clinch the top place in pool A with five straight wins, followed by Serbia and South Korea in second and third respectively.

In pool B, the United States, Italy, Turkey and the Russian Olympic Committee went into the quarterfinals as the top four finishers. Enditem
