CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- World record holder Qiu Hongmei of China wasted four attempts but still won the gold medal in the women's 58kg category at the weightlifting world championships here on Saturday.

Qiu, world record holder in the jerk at 141kg, combined lifts of 103kg in the snatch with 135kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 238kg.

Qiu missed her first two attempts in the jerk on 133kg. She called for 135kg, which put her in position to win the gold medal.

She tried her best in the last chance, and hoisted 135kg in determination to catch the gold.

"I don't know why I failed in four attempts. There was nothing wrong with me but I was not excited enough in the competition," Qiu told press.

"I was almost fainted when she began to lift 135kg," said Ma Wenhui, head coach of Chinese women's team.

Marina Shainova of Russia, bronze medalist in the worlds in 2005, challenged Qiu as she took the lead with 105kg in the snatch while Qiu followed her on 103kg.

The 21-year-old Shainova stumbled in the jerk when she also failed in her first two attempts and finally lifted 132kg.

"I think Shainova is not an all-round lifter, because she did not do a good job in her jerk," said Ma.

Snatching 103kg, Qiu had to lifted at least 135kg to steal the gold from Shainova and she did so after two unsuccessful attempts.

Shainova took the silver and Jong-ae of DPR. Korea the bronze on 227kg.

Earlier in the day, defending champion Andrei Rybakou of Belarus broke one world record to take the gold medal with a total of 393kg in the men's 85kg category.

Rybakou, silver medalist in Athens Olympics, showed his awesome power in the snatch as he hoisted 187kg in his third attempt to create the new world record.

"I've been prepared for that for a long time," Rybakou told press.

Aslambek Ediev of Russia lifted the silver with 372kg, 21kg less than Rybakou and Vadzim Straltsou of Belarus the bronze on 370kg.

Rybakou became the first lifter who set world record in the ongoing world championships in Chaing Mai.

Chinese Lu Yong, silver medalist in the worlds in 2005, finished with the sixth place with a toal of 363kg.

"I sprained my left ankle after I arrive here. I could feel the pain when I was lifting," he said.
