Federer wins 16th Grand Slam title at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Roger Federer won his fourth Australian Open and his 16th grand slam title with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6( 13) victory over Andy Murray at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

Federer cruised to a two-set lead over the 23-year-old Scot before going down a break in the third set.

But the world number one broke back with Murray serving for the set at 5-4 and then took out a thrilling tie-break 13-11 after saving five set points.

Federer has now won an unparalleled 16 grand slam titles from 22 final appearances, including triumphs at the 2004, 2006 and 2007 Australian Opens.

It was also the Swiss star's second grand slam final victory over Murray, defeating the Scot in straight sets in the 2008 U. S. Open decider.

Murray was aiming to become the first male British grand slam singles champion in 74 years.
