SHANGHAI, Feb. 7(Xinhuanet)-- The non-stop charter flights arriving from Taiwan Province peaked Monday in this east China's metropolis.

The four Taiwan airlines were Trans Asia Airways, Eva Air, Far Eastern Air Transport Co. and UNI Air. Each operated a round-trip flight between Taipei and Shanghai.

Including a Shanghai Airlines flight to Kaohsiung, the five across-straits flights carried 901 passengers to Taiwan to spend the coming holiday season on the island, aviation authorities herein Shanghai said.

Meanwhile, the four airlines transported 317 passengers from Taiwan to Shanghai, who were family members and relatives of Taiwanese businesspeople staying in Shanghai and nearby areas, the sources added.

Between Jan. 29 and Feb. 7, 11 charter flights were recorded between Shanghai and Taiwan, carrying 343 passengers from Taiwan and 2,336 passengers to the island, the sources said.

As of Monday, charter flight services with Shanghai as terminal will suspend for the week-long holiday and will resume on Feb. 13,according to the sources.

The Chinese mainland and Taiwan civil aviation professionals reached consensus about the launch of the charter flights earlier last month in Macao. The two sides agreed to run the flights from Jan. 29 to Feb. 20 between mainland cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou and Taiwan's Taipei and Kaohsiung.

The non-stop charter flight services were exclusively arranged for Taiwan business people working in the mainland to return home for the Chinese Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival, which falls on Feb. 9.

It is estimated that there are more than 700,000 Taiwan people working on the mainland and living there for most of the year.
