HONG KONG, March 10(Xinhuanet)-- Least people were killed in road accident in Hong Kong last year in the past 45 years, according to a government press Thursday.
The road accident fatality rates dropped to 160 last year, but there is no room for complacency, Road Safety Council Chairman Tang King-shing said.
Launching the Road Safety Campaign Thursday, Tang said road safety is an ongoing battle and the council this year will step uppromotion of"Smart Driving", educating drivers to"Be Courteous, Stay Alert and Abide by the Law".
"We should all be responsible road users, with commitment to road safety and care and concern for other road users," he added.
Tang called on the public to join hands with the council in realizing the vision of"Zero Accidents on the Road, Hong Kong's Goal".
A television special appealing to cyclists, pedestrians and professional drivers to follow road safety rules will be broadcaston local TV station on March 25.
Joint efforts will be made with non-government and community bodies including District Councils to drive home the road safety message to the public. Cycling safety is also a theme in this year's publicity program in Hong Kong.
