4th"wrong drug" death confirmed in HK

HONG KONG, June 2(Xinhuanet)-- The coroner will investigate the death of a fourth patient who received the wrong medicine from a Wong Tai Sin doctor, the Hong Kong Department of Health said on Thursday.

The 72-year-old woman was prescribed a drug labeled"simethicone" on Jan. 15. She died on May 13.

Of the 152 patients who had consulted the doctor and were dispensed suspectedly-labelled drugs, the department has successfully contacted 145 and is working to find the rest. Sixty-four were reported to have low blood sugar symptoms after taking the anti-diabetes drug.

Of the 18 admitted to hospitals, including the four who died, 13 have been discharged and one, an 89-year-old woman, has been inQueen Elizabeth Hospital since May 25.

The department said people without diabetes who have taken"simethicone" would develop symptoms of muscular weakness and incoordination, mental confusion and sweating. If severe, it may lead to coma.

The"wrong drug" cases have been referred to the coroner through the police for follow-up investigations. Enditem
