Most Taiwanese support earlier direct link with mainland

BEIJING, Oct. 11(Xinhuanet)-- Some 59 percent of Taiwan people want the Taiwan authorities to open direct mail, trade, air and shipping services across the Taiwan Straits as early as possible to facilitate economic development, found a survey carried out by a Taiwan based opposition party.

The public opinion survey was recently concluded by the People First Party(PFP) in the evenings of Oct. 6 and 7 by sample calling residents island wide, said Chang Hsien-yao, director of PFP's policy center, Tuesday in Taiwan, according to Taiwan media.

The survey also found 42 percent of the respondents would oppose an ongoing military procurement budget promoted by the Taiwan authorities which will cost 340 billion New Taiwanese dollars, in comparison with 34 percent supporting. Enditem
