HONG KONG, Jan. 19(Xinhuanet)-- Hong Kong East Rail service, which was cut back slightly during the morning peak hours due to emergency train repairs, is under close watch, Hong Kong Transport Department said on Thursday.

The department asked bus operators to strengthen services from the New Territories East to urban areas when necessary.

Kowlooon-Cantoon Railway Corporation (KCRC) announced on Thursday morning three trains required emergency repairs after examination. The number of East Rail trips operated from 8:00 a.m.to 9:00 a.m.on Thursday was reduced from 23 to 21 an hour in each direction. The frequency was maintained at every three minutes.

Meanwhile, two southbound trains were canceled and emergency buses were arranged to stand by.

KCRC Senior Corporate Affairs Manager Ida Leung explained that the move aimed to ensure train and passenger safety. While the number of passengers before 8:00 a.m. on Thursday was higher than usual, the train operation was smooth.

She said evening peak train service will not be affected. Enditem
