TAIPEI, Aug 8 (AP) -- Tropical storm Pabuk swirled across the southern tip of Taiwan on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain to most of the island but causing no major damage or casualties.

Pabuk hit Taiwan at 2:00 a.m. (1800 GMT Tuesday), and less than three hours later was moving westward across the Taiwan Strait, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau.

At 5:30 a.m. (2130 GMT Tuesday) the bureau placed it about 170 kilometers (106 miles) southwest of Penghu island, moving west toward southeast China at 25 kilometers (16 miles) per hour, and packing sustained winds of 100 kph (63 mph).

On Lanyu island off southeast Taiwan, offices and schools were closed Tuesday afternoon as the storm hit, but no casualties were reported.

Elsewhere, power supplies were disrupted to 3,000 households in the southern county of Pingtung, the Central News Agency said.
