Chinese envoy urges compatriots across Taiwan Strait to jointly safeguard cross-Strait welfare

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Wang Guangya, Wednesday called on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to safeguard and promote cross-Strait welfare together.

Wang made the remarks shortly after the General Committee of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly refused to include the so-called issue of Taiwan's application for UN "membership," raised by the Solomon Islands and a very few other countries, in the agenda of the assembly.

"This has once again demonstrated that any acts contravening the tenets and principles of the UN Charter and violating UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 are unpopular," he told reporters.

"We appreciate the justified positions taken by the United Nations and the vast number of member states in safeguarding the one-China principle, the tenets and principles of the UN Charter and Resolution 2758," the Chinese ambassador said.

Wang stressed that "there is only one China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. This is a fact recognized by the international community."

"The United Nations is an international organization whose membership requires statehood. As a part of China, Taiwan is not eligible to apply for UN membership," he said.

No matter what plots are employed by the Taiwan authorities, none of its attempts to seek "Taiwan independence" through secessionist activities in the United Nations will ever win international support, he added.

Wang noted that the Chen Shui-bian authorities, in order to seek personal and party interests, have further intensified its secessionist activities by intentionally provoking confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.

"Instead of offering blessings to the Taiwan compatriots, these activities can only cause disastrous consequences," he said.

"We hope and believe that the Taiwan compatriots can clearly see Chen's ulterior motives," Wang said.

He finally concluded that the more intent the "Taiwan independence" forces are in trying to disrupt cross-Strait exchanges and undermine peaceful reunification, the more closely the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be united in making a clear distinction between right and wrong, so as to make concerted efforts to safeguard and promote cross-Strait welfare and usher in a better future of peace, development and prosperity.

Since 1993, the UN General Assembly has for the 15th consecutive time thwarted Taiwan's attempt to join the world body, which is composed of sovereign states.
