KAOHSIUNG, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit southern Taiwan at 4:57 a.m. Saturday (Beijing time), local meteorological department reported.
The epicenter, at a depth of 50.5 km, is located at 31.6 km west of a seismic station in Fangliao Township, Pingdung, the southern most county in Taiwan.
The tremor could be felt in Pingdung and neighboring Kaohsiung.
No casualty has been reported so far.
