Traffic accidents in Macao down 3% in first 9 months of 2009

MACAO, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Macao recorded a total of 9,316 cases of traffic accidents between January and September 2009, dropping by 3 percent over the same period of last year, according to the figures released on Wednesday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

These accidents have resulted in 3,357 victims and ten of them were killed during the period, the DSEC figures indicated.

Meanwhile, the number of licensed vehicles in Macao reached 187,096 at the end of September this year, which was a year-on-year increase of 3 percent, according to the DSEC. Of the vehicles, 54 percent (101,117) were motorcycles and 39 percent (72,445) were light private cars.

New registration of vehicles decreased by 22 percent year-on-year to 12,020 in the first nine months of 2009, with motorcycles and light private cars accounting for 68 percent and 26 percent respectively.
