HONG KONG, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A mixed doubles final between two Chinese Taipei pairs saw the end to the tennis competition at the East Asian Games here on Thursday.
Chuang Chia Jung/Yi Chu Huan brought Chinese Taipei the third tennis gold medal after edging Hsieh Su Wei/Lee Hsin Han, Chinese Taipei, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in the overdue final, that was rescheduled for today due to rainy weather on Wednesday.
Chang Kai Chen pulled off the women's singles title, beating China's Zhang Shuai 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 while Chuang Chia Jung and HsiehSu Wei breezed past South Koreans Kim So Jung and Lee Jin A 6-0, 6-3 to lift the women's doubles trophy.
Zeng Shaoxuan and Zhang Ze brought China the men's doubles glory, overcoming Lee Hsin Han and Yi Chu Huan of Chinese Taipei.
Yuichi Sugita led a Japanese one-two finish in the men's singles final, easing past fellow countryman Tatsuma Ito 6-3, 6-1.
For the Chinese team leader Gao Shenyang, the result was not a satisfactory one for a Chinese team without its top women's players such as world number 15 Li Na and Zheng Jie, ranked 36th.
"It is not possible for us to forever rely on players like Zheng Jie. Young players, however, showed no edge over their opponents even in East Asia in this 'drill'," said Shen. "They need not only to improve their techniques but need a strong mind."
"The national team will be adjusted in 2009 as we are going to step up with training the young players," he said.
