TAIPEI, Apr 20 (AP) -- The leader of Taiwan's opposition Nationalist Party will hold a historic meeting with China's President Hu Jintao in Beijing on April 29, party officials said Wednesday.
Chairman Lien Chan's visit -- opposed by the current Taiwanese government -- would mark the first time that the leaders of Nationalist and Communist parties have met since the two fought a bitter civil war which ended with Taiwan and China splitting in 1949.
"(The meeting) will produce a large and significant influence on Taiwan and on peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," party official Lin Feng-cheng told reporters.
The party previously said that Lien would visit China -- on the heels of a controversial visit to the mainland by his deputy last month -- but on Wednesday announced the first details of the one-week, four-city trip.
The Nationalists had no immediate comment about what Lien would discuss with Hu.
Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian, who ended more than five decades of Nationalist rule in Taiwan by defeating Lien in the 2000 presidential elections, has warned Lien against making the visit without government authorization.
Chen has said that Lien could face treason charges if he signs any agreements with China.
Lien will leave Taiwan on April 26 to head for Nanjing first, where the founder of his party, Sun Yat-sen, lies buried in a mausoleum.
In Beijing, Lien will also make a speech at Beijing University, where students will have the opportunity to ask the Taiwanese politician questions, Lin said.
After the April 29 meeting with Hu, Lien will visit his birthplace Xi'an, and Shanghai, where he will meet Taiwanese businesspeople. Lien will return to Taiwan on May 3, Lin said.
