PARIS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- A new global campaign "Cities Are Key" was launched in Cannes, France on Monday to amplify the leadership role of cities in the lead-up to 2015 Paris Climate Conference in December.

It was launched by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) in partnership with International Advertising Association.

The campaign was announced via continuous advertisements on the iconic "Grand Screen" digital billboard in the city throughout the week-long Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

It intends to capitalize on key moments on the Road to Paris to spread global awareness about cities' potential to deliver emissions reductions necessary by 2020 to limit global warming to 2 degree Celsius, said the organizer.

"C40 represents more than 75 megacities and we know the importance of these cities taking actions and creating results to fight climate change. So we're very proud to be able to launch this thought provoking global pro bono campaign honouring the mayors of some of the worlds greatest cities," said Marie Scott Poulsen, director of Communications in C40.

"As mayors, our primary focus is on making our cities the most sustainable, prosperous places for our citizens to live and work, which doesn't leave much time to broadcast to the world what we're able to achieve", a press release quoted C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor, Eduardo Paes, as saying.

In addition to the "Cities Are Key" campaign launch on the Grand Screen at Cannes, the campaign will also include videos highlighting C40 city solutions broadcast to hundreds of thousands of pedestrians and vehicles from a digital billboard in New York City's iconic Times Square during Climate Week NYC in September, explained Poulsen.

Poulsen said that the campaign will also be introduced to more than half of C40's member cities throughout the year, as well as a sustained social media campaign under the hashtag #CitiesAreKey.

Created and led by cities since 2005, C40 is a network of the world's megacities, focusing on tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens.
