At least 20 sailors and civilians die aboard a Russian nuclear submarine when a fire extinguishing system is activated by mistake during trials in the Sea of Japan. .

Twenty-one others were injured. They're being treated for various degrees of poisoning in hospitals near Vladivostok. The name and class of the submarine involved have not been officially revealed. But there are reports it was the K-152 Nerpa, an Akula-class attack submarine, undergoing final checks before being handed over to the navy. The accident is the deadliest to hit Russia's navy since the Kursk nuclear submarine exploded beneath the Barents Sea in 2000, killing all 118 sailors on board.
