Ice encased many parts of America's north-eastern states after some of the worst ice storms for generations.

More than a million homes and businesses across New York and New England were left without power after the first storms struck on Friday, bringing down trees and utility lines.

States of emergency were declared in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and in parts of Maine and New York State.

At least four people have been killed.

New Hampshire governor John Lynch said the devastation was far greater than storms 10 years ago, which left many households without power for more than a week.

Forecasters warned residents that the freezing weather would last through the weekend and into the new week.

Those without generators are being urged to seek refuge in emergency shelters.

State authorities are warning people to stay off the roads - described as treacherous.

Officials say it'll be at least several days before all power is restored.
