The world famous Copacabana beach in Brazil and all seems pretty normal.
But the calm was set to be interrupted by a parade with a difference.
Because the pets of Rio de Janeiro turned up in their hundreds in party mood and dressed up to the nines.
They were attending an event to promote kindness to animals and owners had certainly shown plenty of care in picking costumes.
There were angels and devils and the odd chic chihuahua.
This cat came as a witch drawing a lot of admiration and managing to evade a sea of dogs.
Some animals came as other animals - this one is a bat - but it's anyone's guess what this costume was meant to be.
And some came dressed up as their owners - this dog's owner thought the parade an excellent idea.
SOUNDBITE: Luiz Carlos Negrini, a 59 year-old resident of Rio, saying: (Portuguese)
"It's a good way to promote good relationships with animals, and to show love and respect, devotion and care."
It was an excuse for frills and girlie excess - the odd bride and a lot of canine showing off.
For those who think dogs only like sniffing lampposts this parade revealed a whole new side.
But if a civilization is judged by the way people treat their animals - then Brazil must be very civilized indeed.
