A riderless horse gallops along the banks of the River Seine leaving onlookers stunned and stopping traffic.
What had happened?
The beast had apparently thrown its rider - one of the Republican Guard on ceremonial duty at the Elysee palace.
Garibaldi, that's the horse's name, then thundered down five kilometres of busy Parisian streets, crossing several intersections before heading down a one-way street the wrong way.
As can be seen from these pictures, the police were quickly in hot pursuit, along with this media camera.
After falling several times during the short escapade Garibaldi was finally caught and subdued.
He was slightly injured. His original rider, reportedly, was unharmed.
