China's top male model Hu Bing shows his darker side in "The Back", a film noir about how ordinary people were effected by China's rapid economic growth in the wake of the Cultural Revolution.

The film follows Hong Tao, played by Hu, who leaves the poverty of the countryside to work in a fancy Beijing restaurant with dreams of the good life - until a family secret from the days of the Cultural Revolution returns to haunt him.

Model-turned-actor Hu said he relished the opportunity to play a serious dramatic role - be he first had to get past his reputation with the public for just being good looking.

SOUNDBITE Actor, Hu Bing, saying (Mandarin):

"Because everyone has an impression of me as a supermodel, an elegant, good looking guy, that is my image, but in this film, I am a bit crazy and confused, I have a lot of problems so people won't believe it's me."

The part took it's toll, though: Hu said he holed up in his apartment after shooting, unable to get out of character.

SOUNDBITE Actor, Hu Bing, saying (English):

"I can't go out, I turn out the light. Three months I'm going too crazy. I call my director and I say 'I cannot, I cannot.' The movie already finished, I'm already done but I cannot move out, I feel like I'm still inside the movie, what's going on?' And he said take a relax, go and do holiday."

Having survived the hectic transition from glamour celebrity to thespian, Hu joked he looked forward to reinventing himself in a more laid back way next time.

SOUNDBITE Actor, Hu Bing, saying (English):

"I want to be panda because I don't want this worry, I don't want people you know media always say something, I want to be really relaxed, I want to eat something, people give me something, I'm so happy, I'm buy airplane, it's first first class, I can go to any country and people are like "aaah, panda coming", you know, and I don't need to worry anything."

"The Back" is screening in competition at the Rome Film Festival which runs through to November 5.
