World celebrates royal engagement

The news of Britain's royal engagement made headlines around the world.

"The royal family has a new member with the announcement Prince William and his long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton are are engaged to be married."

Across Asia.. from Thailand.. to South Korea.. newspapers were splashed with stories about Prince William's engagement to Kate Middleton.

SOUNDBITE: Kanond Yingwanna, Bangkok resident, saying (Thai)

"I think she has to adjust herself quite a lot and also the royal family might also have to deliberate about this too but if everyone can adjust themselves, it should be fine."

SOUNDBITE: Rujira Krabuansin, Bangkok resident, saying (Thai)

"I feel like finally they have done it because they had a problem before which they kept secret. After reading the newspaper, yeah, I feel like finally they are going to marry. I've been supporting them for a long time."

After years of speculation of "will they, won't they?" Buckingham Palace announced the royal couple will marry in London in the spring or summer of 2011.

For some New Yorkers, the engagement couldn't come soon enough.

"I said it's about time. He's getting old enough to be engaged."

The well-wishes came from every corner of the globe.

In Canada, locals celebrated the news.

SOUNDBITE: Unidentified woman, saying (English)

"I think that's awesome. I think that it's a step forward, probably, for the next generation, the fact that a royal can marry someone who's not been selected for him, specifically. And hopefully it will change the future of the royals too. I mean, they're kind of a figurehead now and hopefully that goes forward."

The pair became engaged while on holiday in Kenya.

William and Kate's marriage will take place 30 years after the wedding of William's parents - Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.
