Hollywood's Christian Bale to star in domestically-funded Chinese film.
Hollywood star Christian Bale is set to star in a Chinese film.
"Thirteen Women of Nanjing", directed by "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers" director, Zhang Yimou, sees "The Fighter" star play a religious man who saves a group of young women from Japanese occupying forces in 1937.
The project marks the first time a domestically-funded Chinese movie has placed a Hollywood actor.
Zhang believes with the help of this film, Chinese cinema will fare better internationally, than the nation's much loved but underperforming football team.
"So, Chinese movies will take the world stage. This slogan has been around for a long time, but I reckon that this will happen more quickly than for Chinese soccer."
"Thirteen Women of Nanjing", set to begin filming in Nanjing in early January 2011, could be the first fully Chinese-funded film with a Hollywood lead to succeed at in China and abroad.
