QUITO, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Ecuadorian Defense minister Wellington Sandoval proposed Thursday the reinforcement of Ecuador's northern border with Colombia to prevent future Colombian military incursions.

Speaking to local television, Sandoval said the radar equipment on the border with Colombia is outdated.

The 500-km jungle border with Colombia is inhospitable and it is practically impossible to control, he added.

Ecuador broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia and sent soldiers to the border following a Colombian military incursion into Ecuadorian territory Saturday to attack Colombian rebels.

Sandoval said insufficient military surveillance on the border allowed the incursion.

The attack, which killed Colombia's Revolutionary Armed Forces'(FARC) international spokesman Edgar Devia alias Raul Reyes and other guerrilla troops, was carried out with technological support from the United States, said Sandoval.

The Colombian military launched five smart bombs supplied by the U.S. against FARC, said Sandoval, quoting Ecuadorian military experts who inspected the scene of the attack.
