SOFIA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and U.S. President George W. Bush discussed Bulgaria's role as a factor of stability in the region, the BTA reported Thursday.

"We had the opportunity to discuss the situation in Southeastern Europe and the Black Sea region where Bulgaria plays a key role," said Stanishev at a news conference in Washington, who paid an official visit to U.S..

Bulgaria's role in the Black Sea region is exceptionally important, Stanishev said. "We are a door to this region for both the EU and NATO," he argued and went on to underscore the importance of the Black Sea region as a transport corridor and for energy security.

Bulgaria is a good friend of the U.S. and is aware of its responsibilities as a member of the NATO, as well as its role for the stability of the Western Balkans, the prime minister underscored.

"On the Balkans we shall continue to lead a policy of stability and to contribute to the common success of NATO. There shouldn't be 'black holes' here that undermine stability and democratic development," he added, stating categorically that Bulgaria firmly supports and will continue to work for the European and Euro-Atlantic prospects of the countries in the Western Balkans.
