Indonesia records 295 deaths during fast-breaking festival exodus

JAKARTA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, recorded 295 deaths from a total of 695 traffic accidents during the fast-breaking festival exodus this year, The Jakarta Post on Friday quoted Indonesian National Police as saying.

"As many as 631 were badly injured while the number of those suffering from light injuries are 631," said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Abubakar Nataprawira, citing the police's log between Sept. 25 and Oct. 3.

Abubakar added that the accidents made a total property loss of241 million Rupiahs (about 26,000 U.S. dollars), far less than the3.28 billion Rupiahs (about 350,000 U.S. dollars) last year, when the number of accidents totaled 1,875.

The National Police Traffic Director Brig. Gen. Yudi Susharyanto attributed the cause of most accidents to drivers' fatigue.
