Airport protesters defy Thai police

A group of demonstrators confronted police trying to end a blockade at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, forcing them to retreat.

At this point, there's no sign of police regrouping and trying again. And the Thai army's refusal to step in to support the embattled government of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat is fuelling rumours of a military-backed coup. Protesters supporting the opposition People's Alliance have been blockading the two main airports in the capital, cutting Bangkok's air links and leaving thousands of tourists stranded. The PM has refused to quit and the protesters say they won't go until he does.
