Chicago, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Fresh winter storm is expected to hit U.S. upper Midwest which has been gripped by a brutal cold caused by a severe snow storm last week, a report by the U.S. National Weather Service said Tuesday.

According to the report, 2 to 4 inches of snow could fall Tuesday with an additional 1 to 2 inches overnight. And another 1 to 3 inches could fall on Wednesday. Snow could be mixed with sleet and freezing rain in some areas.

Police reported dozens of road accidents overnight in Illinois and other Midwest states which were hit by a severe winter storm last weekend.

Sources of Amtrak, the major U.S. railway company, said severely cold temperatures caused lengthy delays to trains to and from Chicago, the largest city in the Midwest, for the past few days.

Chicago's O'Hare International Airport reported a dozen flight cancellations Tuesday.

The city will dispatch hundreds of snow-plowing trucks to work on main streets on the Christmas eve.
