Backgrounder: Obama inaugural activities on Jan. 19

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following is a schedule of events related to the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on Monday, one day before he is sworn in as the country's 44th president.

1330 GMT

Obama leaves Blair House to visit wounded troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

1530 GMT

National Day of Community Service event: Obama, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and their wives will join volunteers in a community renovation project in the Washington area to honor Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated 40 years ago.

Monday is a federal holiday that commemorates the Jan. 15, 1929,birth of King, who advocated peaceful resistance and equality among all races.

"Martin Luther King's was a life lived in loving service to others. As we honor that legacy, it's not a day just to pause and reflect -- it's a day to act," Obama said in a statement.

Obama makes remarks at the Community Service Luncheon.

Obama to attend three private dinners to honor former secretaryof State Colin Powell, Biden and Senator John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, for their public service.

Dinners will be held at the Hilton Washington, National Building Museum and Union Station.

Incoming first lady Michelle Obama will host a children's evening concert at the Verizon Center honoring military families.
