Committee formed to probe attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A committee has been constituted to probe the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team by unknown gunmen and would submit its report within 24 hours, Minister of State for Interior Tasnim Ahmed Qureshi said here on Tuesday.

The official Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Tasnim Ahmed Qureshi as saying that the attack was the activity of anti-state element aimed at destabilizing the peace process in the country.

"It is premature to say anything about the elements behind the heinous crime, however the involvement of foreign hands cannot be ruled out," he said.

Tasnim Ahmed Qureshi said enough security was provided to Sri Lankan cricket team. He said the police officials had sacrificed their lives for the protection of the Sri Lankan team.

At least seven persons including five policemen were killed and six cricket players of Sri Lanka were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at the players' bus and the policemen escorting them, according to local press reports.

ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The International Cricket Council (ICC) Tuesday condemned the attack on players of Sri Lankan cricket team in Pakistan's Lahore.

"We note with dismay and regret the events of this morning in Lahore and we condemn this attack without reservation," Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat of the ICC said in a statement. Full story

COLOMBO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has unequivocally condemned the attack on the Sri Lankan Cricket Team in Lahore, Pakistan resulting in the injuries to at least six cricketers.

Rajapakse, who is on a state visit to Nepal, emphasized that the Sri Lankan team had gone to Pakistan as ambassadors of goodwill, said a statement issued by the president's office on Tuesday. Full story

ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Members of the Sri Lankan cricket team were wounded by a dozen gunmen in the Pakistani city of Lahore, a report said on Tuesday.

Lahore police said the team's bus managed to drive to a stadium but five police were killed in the attack, according to Reuters' report. Full story

ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan on Tuesday strongly condemned the terror attack on the Sri Lankan Cricket Team in the eastern city of Lahore.

ISLAMABAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President and Prime Minister Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in eastern Pakistan, which killed five policemen and wounded four Sri Lankan cricketers.

President Asif Ali Zardari asked the authorities concerned to immediately investigate the incident so that the perpetrators were identified and their motives exposed, according to official Associated Press of Pakistan. Full story
