MOSCOW, March 21 (Xinhua) -- A two-day special operation in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan has ended with the death of 12 militants, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on Saturday citing the local interior ministry.
Abdulgapur Zakaryayev, leader of the 12-member group, was also killed in the operation, an unnamed spokesman said.
The operation started after a clash on Wednesday between law enforcement officers and militants. Five servicemen were killed and three others were wounded.
Dagestan, a mountainous region west of Chechnya, is plagued by daily violence. Attacks targeting security forces and officials are common in the region.
