TEHRAN, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said Thursday that Iran has started the production of new medium-range surface-to-air missile, local satellite Press TV reported.
The smart missile has a range of more than 40 km and travels at supersonic speed before hitting the targeted enemy aircraft, Vahidi said in Iran's southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
He said the technologically advanced missile can be used in electronic warfare and the missile breaks into small pieces and acts as shrapnel upon impact, according to the report.
The Iranian navy successfully test-fired a new missile from its first indigenously-built Jamaran destroyer in the waters of the Persian Gulf, Press TV reported on Tuesday.
In a footage shown on Press TV, the surface-to-surface Nour missile successfully hit its target at a distance of 100 km in the test-fire on Tuesday.
Over the past years, Iran has made considerable progress in producing home-made multiple-range missiles.
