Sweden, Belgium seek closer ties to ASEAN

JAKARTA, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Sweden and Belgium newly- officiated envoys to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed interests of strengthening cooperation between their countries and the organization, ASEAN said on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by ASEAN on Wednesday, the two envoys paid a courtesy call to ASEAN Secretary General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, conveying that their countries are seeking closer ties with ASEAN, keen on strengthening their cooperation with the region.

Presenting her Letter of Credentials as the Ambassador to ASEAN, Ambassador Ewa Polano from Sweden informed Dr Surin Pitsuwan that the Swedish government was pleased with ASEAN's development, particularly the establishment of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

Sweden, in addition, is interested to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN in the areas of human rights, democracy, sustainable development, climate change and sustainable green city development.

Meanwhile, when presenting his Letter of Credentials to Dr Surin, Ambassador Christiaan Tanghe from Belgium said that his country was keen on strengthening not only the cooperation under the ASEAN-EU (ASEAN-European Union) and ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting), but also its bilateral relations with ASEAN.
