RIYADH/WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz has passed away, Saudi and U.S. media reported Saturday.

Both the Saudi news agency SPA and national television confirmed the news, quoted the royal palace as saying that the Crown Prince Sultan died of illness.

U.S. broadcaster CNN first reported the death, citing a unidentified U.S. State Department source, without giving much details.

The Crown Prince Sultan was one of the top figures in the oil-rich kingdom, serving as second deputy prime minister and minister of defense and aviation, it reported.

He had various medical issues in recent years, and have travelled to Morocco for treatments, the report said. He had been in the United States since June and underwent a medical operation on in July.
