LAGOS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- More than 61 people have been killed in the past days in the clash between the Nigerian army and the militant sect Boko Haram in the West African country's northeastern region, the military said on Saturday.

At least 50 Boko Haram fighters died in the exchange of fire with the army around the city of Damaturu in the region, the military said in a report monitored here.

The fighting, which broke out on Thursday, was also reported in Maiduguri, another troubled city in the region where attacks by Boko Haram have repeatedly hit headlines this year.
