Thai military prepares evacuation camps, choppers after Tsunami warning

BANGKOK, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Thai army set up evacuation camps while the navy prepared the aircraft carrier and three choppers for rescue and evacuation missions following Tsunami warning in six Andaman coastal provinces on Wednesday.

Col. Pramote Prom-in, spokesperson of the fourth army region ( southern), said during his interview with the Royal Thai Army Radio and Television Channel 5 that the army had already set up four evacuation camps in the southern provinces of Nakorn Si Thammarat, Trang, Krabi and Satun.

The army in the southern region also prepared helicopters and urged people in the disaster-prone area to stay alert in the face of Tsunami threat.

Meanwhile, Gp. Capt. Anirut Sawasdee, commander of Chakri Naruebet aircraft carrier, said that the navy mobilized around 500 personnel and prepared three choppers for the purpose of rescue and evacuation mission.

Following 8.6-magnitude earthquake that hit off Sumatra, Indonesia Wednesday afternoon, Tsunami warning was issued in six Andaman coastal provinces of Thailand Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun.
