BAGHDAD, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The explosion of several bombs planted in a vehicle killed six people and injured 52 others at a crowded market in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Friday.

An official from the interior ministry told Xinhua on condition of anonymity that the blast took place in Husseiniya district in northeast of the city, adding that the police have cordoned off the area and transported the injured to hospital.

As some of the wounded are in critical conditions, the death toll may rise later, said the source.

No one has so far claimed responsibility for the attack and investigations are underway, said the official.

Meanwhile, unidentified gunmen using weapons with silencers, attacked a police checkpoint in Bayaa, southwestern Baghdad on Friday, killing three police officers, said the interior ministry source.

The gunmen fled the scene after the attack, said the official.
