NEW DELHI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- In a tragic incident, 13 people, including 11 women, were killed when a speeding truck mowed them down while they were sleeping on the roadside slums and pavement in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh late Saturday night, a senior police official said Sunday.

"The mishap happened in the state's Etawah district. Some 17 people were sleeping when 13 of them were run over by the truck after its driver lost control of the vehicle. All the victims died on the spot while others who sustained injuries have been rushed to a local hospital," he said, on condition of anonymity.

The driver of the truck has managed to flee but efforts are on to nab him, the official said, adding that a probe has been ordered into the incident.

A large number of homeless people sleep on pavements in cities and towns across the country, often becoming victims of road mishaps.
